Exploring the United Kingdom!

In Year 1, the children have been learning all about the United Kingdom. They discovered that the UK is made up of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The children explored some of the landmarks and traditions from each country, including famous sights such as Big Ben and castles, as well as learning about national flags and capital cities. They enjoyed using maps to find where the countries are and talked about what makes each one special.

Through a range of fun activities, art and discussions, the children developed their understanding of where they live and their place in the wider world.

Jackson Pollock Inspired Art!

We have explored the exciting and expressive art style of Jackson Pollock. They learned about his unique technique of action painting, where paint is dripped, splashed and flicked onto the canvas to create energetic and abstract designs.

The children used a range of tools such as brushes, straws and even their hands to experiment with movement and colour. They carefully chose colours and enjoyed creating layers, watching how the paint mixed and spread in different ways.

This project encouraged the children to be creative, confident and expressive. They developed their fine motor skills while discovering that art can be fun, messy and full of imagination!

We are very proud of their vibrant and dynamic artwork, inspired by one of the most famous abstract artists.

Let’s Go Fly a Kite!

In History this term, we have been learning all about the Wright brothers and the very first plane. We linked this to our Design and Technology topic by exploring how the Wright brothers used kites to help with their designs. The children have been busy designing and building their own kites!

We’ve looked at the history of kites and their significance in different cultures, explored which materials work best, and thought carefully about colours and patterns. We also created beautiful carp kites inspired by Children’s Day in Japan.

Smashing Shapes!
Class One have been learning all about shapes this term. We’ve explored both 2D and 3D shapes, grouped them in different ways, and noticed lots of interesting patterns. The children have enjoyed going on shape hunts around the school and even singing a few shape songs! Who knew learning about shapes could be so much fun?

Fantastic Forest School

This term, Year 1 have had an amazing time exploring at Forest School! We crowned ourselves forest kings and queens, learnt about hibernation, and built snug little homes to keep animals safe for the winter. We made tasty berry squash, created awesome dens, and had the best time splashing in puddles and getting gloriously muddy in the mud kitchen! Every session has been full of laughter, learning, and a whole lot of forest fun!

Reading and Writing Supports

Below are writing and reading prompts we use in class. We encourage the use of these at home.

Grow the code: We use these daily to help with reading and writing. They contain each sound the children have learnt in phonics.

Vipers: A great range of questions to develop comprehension skills.

CEW: A list of the Year 1 Common Exception Words. We use these to support with spelling
